The disposition of the jack and the stripes is that consecrated in American tradition by the National colors.
The five alternate bars of white and brilliant red have been chosen to symbolize the five boroughs of Grater New York.
The Maltese Cross, the traditional symbol of the fire service appears in the upper left hand corner, with the Seal of the City of New York at it's center and the symbols of firefighting and the initials FDNY in its four arms.
